Project Title. TRASH TRACK
Project abstract. Our project is inspired by the NYC Green In i tiative (www.nyc.gov/PlanNYC2030) ,
wh ich aims to increase the rate of waste recycl ing in the city to almost 1 00% by 2030. Th is is an
ambitious goal , as today’s recycl ing systems are far from optim ized. In New York, on ly 34% of waste is
currently d iverted from landfi l ls for recycl ing . In trying to fi l l th is gap between urban real ity and urban
vision we ask, how can pervasive technolog ies help expose the chal lenges of waste management and
sustainabi l ity? And how can we suggest a future scenario where the same pervasive techno log ies can
make 1 00% recycl ing a real ity, thereby freeing urban land for other uses? Trash Track wi l l tag d ifferent
types of waste and fo l low these through the city’s waste management system to reveal the end-of-l ife
journey of our everyday objects.
